Unusual pets: Introduction

The most common pets are definitely dogs and cats. Many people also keep parrots, rabbits, guinea-pigs and mice. But what about reptiles, monkies, foxes, lions, tigers, wolves, etc.? For those of you, who would like to know more about these unusual pets, I have started this serial of articles.

My and my wife´s pets

For the first I would like to introduce my experiences of keeping animals. As many others, also I keep dogs. Nowadays I (and my wife) have three bitches - they´re crossbreeds of AST, pitbull and bandog. In the past we had two dogs, but they both died due to the illness.

We love reptiles, too. We kept two chameleons. Amazing animals. Each of them had different character, but they both were wonderfull. It is very sad, that their longevity is very short - about three or four years. After this experience we have decided to buy some bigger lizard, which lives longer. So at the end we have an iguana, which my wife rescued from a petshop. It´s fantastic animal, with enough longevity. We also keep two geckos - phelsumas. It is a species of day gecko, so you can watch it during day.

And what about snakes? Yes, we have them, too. I have a beautiful boa, while my wife has two awesome elaphes. My boa constrictor is about one year old. It grows quickly, now it is as long as my wife´s elaphes, which are much more older. In fact, I think, that elaphes are about five or six years old. But I am not sure. The length of all our snakes is about one and a half a meter now. We have our private zoo at home.

Other information

Keeping unusual animals strictly depends on your posibilities of free space at home. Because it is impossible to keep for example tiger in a small flat in the middle of town. But you can have these great predators, if you live near a forest in the house with huge garden. That´s why I have reptiles. You also must remember, that you will need enough money. For the food, for the veterinary care, for the electricity (heating, special lights and bulbs, etc.) - it is not a cheap hobby.

And what about you? Do you keep any unusual pet? Which one?
